The (Palestinian) National and Islamic Forces group was formed shortly after
the outbreak of the second intifada (September 28, 2000 – February 8, 2005) in
2000. It is a committee comprised of representatives from each of the most
important Palestinian political factions, both mainstream and radical with the
authorization of Yasser Arafat and led by Marwan Barghouti (until he was
imprisoned in 2002). The coalition coordinates the agenda of its members and
helps plan and execute joint political actions against Israel. According to the
Anti-Defamation League, the group enjoyed significant influence during the
second intifada, but since the election of Mahmoud Abbas in 2005 it has been
less active.
The coalition includes both PLO and non-PLO factions, some
organizations are listed as terrorist in the West. The group's committee
includes representatives of the following 15 organizations:

Emblem description:

Explanation: The map of Israel and the
territories, nested in the joined hands, signifies the organization's aim
of ruling that land. The flags symbolizes Palestinian nationalism, as
does the Al Aqsa Mosque; the mosque also expresses a religious sentiment.
The joined hands are symbolic of the unity of the different groups that
are part of the organization.
